Kele grew up in Grass Valley and graduated from Nevada Union High School. He attended Weber State on a basketball scholarship, and later completed his basketball eligibility and Bachelor’s degree at CSU Chico. Coach Fitzhugh started his college coaching career in 1987 as a student assistant at CSU Chico under Head Coach Pete Mathieson. After spending 1988 at Butte College as an assistant men’s coach, Kele returned to CSU Chico as the Basketball Head Assistant Coach under “Puck” Smith. During his nine-year tenure as an assistant coach at Chico State, the Wildcats captured four consecutive NCAC championships and made three appearances in the NCAA Division II Western Regional Playoffs. Coach Fitzhugh became the Head Coach for the Knights in 1997. He had immediate success with the Knights winning four G.V.C. Championships in his first five seasons as head coach.
Kele and his wife Karin have two children, who both attended Shasta College before transferring to four year colleges. Karle played volleyball and competed on the track and field team while at Shasta College. She graduated from Sacramento State, where she competed on the track and field team, and is now completing her elementary school student teaching credential at Chico State. Andrew played basketball at Shasta College, prior to moving on to Cal Maritime (CSU) where he is continuing his collegiate basketball career, while majoring in International Business and Linguistics.
Kele’s wife, Karin, is a Physical Education instructor and coach at Enterprise High School. In their spare time, Kele and Karin enjoy boating, golf, and spend time with their family and friends.
