Coach Kele Fitzhugh grew up in Grass Valley and graduated from Nevada Union High School. He attended Weber State on a basketball scholarship, and later completed his basketball eligibility and Bachelor’s degree at CSU Chico. Coach Fitzhugh started his college coaching career in 1986-87 as a student assistant at CSU Chico under Head Coach Pete Mathieson. After spending 1987-88 at Butte College as an assistant men’s coach, Kele returned to CSU Chico as the Basketball Head Assistant Coach under “Puck” Smith. During his nine-year tenure as an assistant coach at Chico State, the Wildcats captured four consecutive NCAC championships and made three appearances in the NCAA Division II Western Regional Playoffs. Coach Fitzhugh became the Head Coach for the Knights in 1997. He had immediate success with the Knights winning four G.V.C. Championships in his first five seasons as head coach. In his 25 years of coaching at Shasta College, he has 7 GVC Championships, 5 Second place and 4 third place finishes.

 

Kele and his wife Karin have two children, who both attended Shasta College before transferring to four-year colleges. Karle Fitzhugh (Nye) played volleyball and competed on the track and field team while at Shasta College to later graduate from Sacramento State, where she also competed on the track and field team; Nye is now teaching 6th grade at Mistletoe Elementary. Andrew played basketball at Shasta College, prior to moving on to Cal Maritime (CSU) where he continued his collegiate basketball career while majoring in International Business and Logistics; Andrew is now working at Shasta College. Kele’s wife, Karin, is in her last year of teaching (36 years) Physical Education and coaching, with her last 12 years of teaching at Enterprise High School. In their spare time, Kele and Karin enjoy boating, golfing, RVing and spending time with their family and friends.
