SOUTHERN SHINES AT REDWOODS MEET

Shasta College's Grace Southern continues to dominant the field, earning a first-place finish in the College of the Redwoods "Beat COVID" 2021 Invite on March 18.

Southern ran the 5K course in 23 minutes, 6 seconds, finishing better than a minute ahead of second-placer Maggie Stacy of Redwoods. Southern, a sophomore out of Middletown, was the lone Knight woman to compete in the four-person race.

"Grace had another solid race and is improving on her time from last year at the same course by a minute and a half," said Shasta cross-country coach Taylor Duncan. "We're very happy with the progress she's been making."

For the Shasta men, freshman Marcus Francescut finished in fifth place, completing the 5K race in 21:59, and Isaiah Wilson was 11th in 31:24.

"Marcus is still coming back from an Achilles injury and still ran well but will look to run faster times the next two meets," Duncan said.

Only two schools fielded full teams on the men's side. Redwoods won with 26 points and was followed by Butte College, which had 29 points.
