The Shasta College volleyball team picked up its first pair of wins over the weekend at the Shasta Classic, beating Yuba College in four sets and sweeping Diablo Valley in three sets.
Shasta opened the year at the Sierra Classic on Wednesday where it dropped matches to Sierra and Marin in straight sets.
In the first win of the year, the Knights won 25-17, 25-15, 19-25, 30-28. Shasta was led by Rachel Duhn with 12 kills and nine digs. Four other players recorded at least five kills in the match with Jessica Troxclair (7), Mariah Castle (5), Brea Carter (5) and Cameron Wallace (5). Maddison Smedley had 13 assists and Grace Lommen had 10 assists. Castle also had nine aces to lead the way. Jenna Hodges paced the Knights with 18 digs.
Against Diablo Valley, Shasta won 25-18, 25-10, 25-23. Duhn and Kaitlyn Kirk were the kill leaders for the Knights with eight apiece. Smedley added 14 assists and nine digs, Hodges had 20 digs and Castle's four aces was a team-high.
In the season-opening defeat to Sierra (25-19, 25-19, 25-19), Shasta managed 13 kills in the match, four from Duhn. Smedley had seven assists.
Shasta followed that with a three-set loss to Marin 25-22, 25-20, 25-21. Kirk's six kills was a team-high as the Knights had eight players record a kill in the match. Smedley dished 12 assists and Castle paced the team with nine digs.
Shasta (2-2) hosts Southwestern Community College of Oregon and West Valley College Wednesday for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
