KNIGHTS BEAT AMERICAN RIVER IN OPENING WEEKEND

SACRAMENTO – The Shasta College women's basketball team won one out of three games in Cosumnes River Invitational in Sacramento over the weekend, falling to LA Trade Tech 68-51, beating American River 48-41 and losing to Los Medanos 81-66.

Shasta College freshman Amber Wallace averaged a double-double for the three games with 11 points and 12.7 rebounds to lead the way for the Knights.

The win over American River was the first victory for Stacy Mizuta as the Knights' head coach.

LA Trade Tech 68, Shasta 51
The Knights shot 2-of-20 from 3-point range in the game and were outscored 20-9 in the opening period before exploding for 35 of their 51 points in the second half. Three Shasta players were in double figures with Megan Collins and Riley Wallen each scoring 11 points, Isabela Padilla had 10 points and Wallace scored eight points to go with 17 rebounds. Wallen added nine boards while Collins registered four steals and three assists.

Shasta 48, American River 41
The Knights trailed 22-18 at half but outscored the Beavers 23-6 in the third period to pull away. Wallace had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Kaleia Mizuta had nine points, nine rebounds and six steals and Collins scored eight points and dished three assists.

Los Medanos 81, Shasta 66
The Knights fell behind 42-26 at half and couldn't catch the Mustangs. Five players scored in double figures for Shasta with Mizuta leading the way with 15 points. Wallace scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Collins scored 11 points and dished seven assists, Lexi Robbins scored 11 points off the bench and Padilla scored 10 points to go with seven boards.

Shasta (1-2) plays at Monterey Peninsula on Thursday and at Hartnell on Friday.
