SHASTA SPLITS WITH LASSEN, SWEPT BY SISKIYOUS

REDDING, Calif. – The Shasta College softball team was swept in a doubleheader by College of the Siskiyous 9-4 and 8-4 and split at home with Lassen, falling 9-8 before winning 11-2 in five innings in Golden Valley Conference play last week.

Shelbe Cappello led the Knights' offense with six hits on the week with four RBIs and four runs and Autumn Campbell, Madeline Nightingale each had five hits.

Siskiyous 9, Shasta 4
The Knights committed five errors in the loss, leading four unearned runs by pitcher Whitney Carnes, who gave up five earned runs on 10 hits and struck out eight to take the defeat. She also was 2 for 3 at the plate with a run, Nightingale was 2 for 3 with a double, and Cappello, Autumn Giannini and Campbell each had a hit and scored a run. Kaylie McDaniel was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Siskiyous 8, Shasta 4
Shasta scored four in the first inning and led going into the bottom of the sixth. But the Eagles rallied with six runs in the bottom half of the frame and held on to win despite committing five errors. Carnes took the loss in the circle, giving up eight runs – three earned – on eight hits. Cappello was 2 for 4 with a run, Campbell was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Giannini, Nightingale and McKenzy Fernandes each scored a run.

Lassen 9, Shasta 8
The Knights trailed 9-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth but drew a pair of bases loaded walks and two infield groundouts to drive in two more runs to ignite a rally. Shasta added one in the bottom of the sixth on an error but couldn't complete the comeback. Giannini was 2 for 4 with a run, Nightingale was 2 for 4 with two runs, Fernandes was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run, Campbell was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run and Cappello was 1 for 5 with two RBIs. Carnes struck out five and walked none while giving up six runs on five hits in two innings. Kaylie McDaniel fanned two and gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings of relief.

Shasta 11, Lassen 2 (5)
The Knights earned their third mercy-rule victory of the season as a pair of two-run singles from Caitlin France and Savannah Cruz followed by Cappello's RBI double highlighted a seven-run second inning. Cappello was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs, France was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs, Cruz was 1 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs, Fernandes was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run and Carnes, Campbell, Nightingale and Khloe Forrister each scored a run. McDaniel struck out three, walked one and allowed two runs on eight hits in the complete-game victory.

Shasta (2-7 GVC, 8-14) plays six games this week, opening with a non-conference doubleheader at Chabot on Tuesday before hosting Feather River and Siskiyous for doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
