SHASTA COLLEGE OPENS THE YEAR WITH TWO LOSSES

REDDING, Calif. – The Shasta College men's soccer team lost the first two matches to open the season last week, falling 3-1 to Mendocino and 2-1 to Yuba College.

In the opener, Miguel Ortiz III and Stephen Darkwa assisted Giovanni Antonio Garcia Cortez for the Knights' lone goal in the 35th minute that gave them a 1-0 lead they would take into halftime. But Shasta allowed two goals in a 3-minute span and then gave up a goal in the final minute to lose.

Shasta was outshot 26-7 in the loss. Sunny Meng Vang had two saves on its two shots on goal while Jose Roberto Garcia Padilla had four saves and allowed three goals.

In the loss to Yuba, Shasta scored in the 20th minute to take another 1-0 lead. Yuba tied it up before half and picked up an unassisted goal from Salvador Ramirez in the 70th minute to pull away for the victory.

Garcia Cortez had two shots and picked up a yellow card while Sam Elwood and Blake Thompson each recorded a shot.

Shasta gets another chance at Yuba College Friday when the Knights host the 49ers at 4 p.m.
