SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Shasta College's baseball team was swept in a three-game series by Skyline College last week, falling 3-0 and losing a doubleheader 9-7 and 11-9.
The Knights totaled nine hits across the first two games before exploding for 16 in the finale in which four players had multi-hit games after no one achieved the feat in the previous two contests.
Sophomore Payton Edwards paced Shasta with six hits in the series, including going 4 for 4 in the finale with two-run home run, his first of the year. He finished the week with five RBIs.
Game 1 – Skyline 3, Shasta 0
Shasta committed four errors and all five hits were singles from Jarryn Wee, Jakob Weiser, Eric Papas, Edwards and Billy Plummer. Cameron Falcon took the loss, allowing one three runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked one and Jordan Akins allowed one hit in two scoreless innings of relief.
Game 2 – Skyline 9, Shasta 7
A six-run sixth inning put Shasta ahead 6-3 but the Knights gave up six runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings and couldn't recover. Starter Max Holtzclaw took a no decision after striking out five, walking one and allowing five runs on eight hits in six frames. Akins got the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in two innings.
Wee had a double, Edwards was 1 for 2 with two RBIs, a run and two walks, and Daniel Duarte was 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.
Game 3 – Skyline 11, Shasta 9
The Knights jumped out to an early 5-0 lead through the first five frames but the late innings doomed them once again. Edwards was 4 for 4 with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs; Weiser was 3 for 6 with a two-run homer and three RBIs; Mason Wood was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run; and Jackson O'Neal was 3 for 5 with an RBI.
Colby Milligan struck out two, walked 10 and gave up two earned runs on one hit in 4.2 innings. Zac Billingsley took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings.
Shasta College drops to 2-6 overall and has four games this week, playing at Yuba College on Tuesday before a three-game series across three days starting Thursday at home against Canada College.
