REDDING, Calif. – Dominant pitching led the Shasta College baseball team to take a three-game Golden Valley Conference series against College of the Siskiyous over the weekend.
The Knights won the series opener 2-1, lost the second game 6-2 and won the rubber match 13-2 on Monday.
Sam Wells and Kolby Button each earned wins on the mound for Shasta, which moves to 3-3 in GVC play and 8-13 overall.
Shasta lost to Yuba College 6-4 earlier in the week in a nonconference game.
Shasta 2, Siskiyous 1
Wells improved to 4-2 on the season with his eight-inning victory. Wells struck out five, walked two and allowed one run on seven hits. Max Holtzclaw picked up the save, striking out one and allowing one hit in one inning. Daniel Duarte went 2 for 3 with a double and drove in Hunter Rasica twice. Payton Edwards and Easton Waterman each hit a double.
Dylan Bowers was the losing pitcher for Siskiyous. He allowed two runs – one earned – on four hits in six innings.
Siskiyous 6, Shasta 2
Six Knights combined to collect six hits but the only runs came on Rasica's RBI single and he later scored on a fielder's choice. Jakob Weiser had a double and Austin Healy recorded a stolen base. Shasta's Anthony Becerra (1-4) took the loss on the hill, giving up three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings while striking out five.
Alex Krout went eight strong innings for the Eagles with three strikeouts, no walks, and allowed two runs on six hits.
Shasta 13, Siskiyous 2
Six of Shasta's 16 hits went for extra bases as it tagged Siskiyous pitchers Charles Smith and Gage Hamblin for a combined 11 runs. Edwards was 2 for 5 with a double and a two-run single, Brandon Anderson was 2 for 2 with a two-run double and a two run triple, Waterman was 2 for 4 with a double and a run, Rasica was 2 for 5 with an RBI, Duarte was 1 for 3 with two runs, a double and an RBI; Healy scored three times and stole a base, and Jerred Bloom scored twice and drove in a run.
Button (2-1) picked up the win for the Knights. The freshman struck out three, walked four, and allowed no earned runs on three hits in six innings. Wyatt Haydon, Samuel Torsey and Holtzclaw each struck out a batter while throwing a scoreless inning of relief.
Yuba 6, Shasta 4
Shasta's first three pitchers didn't allow an earned run as Holtzclaw struck out four in the first three innings. But the Knights' Connor Marshall gave up three runs in the seventh to take the loss. Shasta's pitching staff only gave up one earned run on the day.
Waterman was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Alex Pynes was 2 for 4 with a run, and Nolan Kenny and Weiser each drove in a run.
Shasta College hosts Lassen at 2 p.m. Friday to open a three-game series and travels to Susanville for a doubleheader Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.
