KNIGHTS OFF TO STRONG START

REDDING, Calif. – The Knights are off to a hot start, reaching the championship game of the Cosumnes River Invitational last weekend.

Shasta College beat West Hills Lemoore 61-53 and beat Los Medanos 79-76 before falling to La Trade Tech 109-61 in the tournament championship.

"This is the first time one of my teams has played for the championship in this tournament," Shasta College head coach Jerry Brown said. "We beat two strong teams with great teamwork and lost in the championship to one of the top teams in Southern California."

Sophomore Kilee Hannan and Julia Hill both earned all-tournament honors.

In the win over West Hills-Lemoore, Hill scored 11 points, freshman Jordan Martinez had 15 points, four assists and three steals, and Hannan had 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Keeley Tuggle pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds to go with seven points.

On Friday against Los Medanos, four Shasta players were in double-figures. Hill recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, Tuggle had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Aubrie Wall scored 13 points, and Martinez scored 11 points to go with a team-high seven assists.

Freshman Kayla Bonomini scored nine points off the bench, making all three of her 3-point attempts. The Knights made 11 3s in the game.

"The driving force has been the play of freshman point guard Jordan Martinez, returner Kilee Hannan, freshman Keeley Tuggle, and two sophomore players that did not play last year in Aubrie Wall and Julie Hill," Brown said. "I have been surprised that with only one returning starter (Hannan) that the play of the incoming freshmen and sophomores has come together so quickly."

Shasta lost its first game to SoCal's No. 11 ranked team, unable to overcome a slow start where it trailed 52-23 at the half. Wall was the lone Knight in double figures with 12 points. Sheleah Stephens scored nine points and the Knights got eight points each from Martinez and Bonomini. Tuggle had a team-best seven rebounds.
