CHICO, Calif. – The Shasta College men's track and field team finished 11th out of 20 teams and the Knight women were 16th Saturday at the Chico State Distance Carnival & Twilight.

The Knights competed against several NCAA Division II and NAIA programs in addition to fellow Golden Valley Conference foes Butte College, College of the Siskiyous and Yuba College.

Shasta's men scored 16 points thanks to a third place finish from Justin Hellyer with a season-best javelin throw of 164 feet, 9 inches, and season-best times from sprinter Chris Rosero in the 100-meter dash (10.83 seconds) and 200-meter dash (22.11).

"It's our training plan to have (Rosero) peaking at the end of the season when championship meets occur so it' nice to see Chris' times matching the training plan," said Bryon Hamilton, Shasta College's head track and field coach. "Justin is new to throwing the javelin so to have hi finish in the top four at an event is awesome. He has a real chance to do very well in the second half of the season."

Other top male finishers included Cole Parker taking seventh in the javelin with a season-best mark of 151-0, and Ashton Vanzant's top mark in the triple jump of 43-8 for a seventh place finish. Shasta's Patrick Bigalow was 12th in the pole vault (13-9.25), Payton Harrell was 18th in the shot put (39-9.75), Samuel Grafe was 22nd in the 1,500 Open run (4:29.39), and Caleb Tolbertson was 29th in the 400 (55.52).

For the Shasta women, Kayla Bickford was seventh in the 400 (1:16.36) and 20th in the 100 (13.44), Julia Hill was 11th in the javelin with a throw of 81-8 and 24th in the 100 (14.29).

Julie Bradley was 14th in the 1,500 Open run (6:27.38) and 26th in the 100 (14.44), and Sabrina Peppel was 16th in the 1,500 Open run (6:48.95).

Hamilton expects to have most of the Shasta athletes competing Saturday in Sacramento at the American River Invite starting at 9 a.m.
