KNIGHT WOMEN WIN SEASON-OPENING MEET

FRESNO, Calif. – Shasta College's women's swim team won the 2018 Clovis Kick-Off Invitational on Saturday while the men finished in fourth place.

College of the Sequoias was the men and women combined winner with 1,174 points, followed by Clovis (1,084), and Shasta (863).

Shasta's Dana McMurtrey the high-point winner for the women, collecting 72 points. The Knights had the top five overall finishers for the women with Abby Griffith in second with 67 points, Shiree Wasko third with 61 points, Stephanie Parsons was fourth with 59 points, and Jericho Strege fifth with 58 points.

The Knights won three individual events on the day. The team of Griffith, McMurtrey, Wasko and Parsons won the 200-yard free style relay in 1 minute, 47.66 seconds. Shasta's 15 combined swimmers totaled 669 points to beat Clovis (554).

McMurtrey won the 100-yard freestyle in 57.48 seconds – nearly five seconds better than her seed time – and the 100 backstroke (1:06.32). She was third in both the 50 back (31.67) and 100 Individual Medley (1:08).

Griffith was second in the 200 IM (2:27.45), the 100 free (57.80) and the 50 back (31.33), and was third in the 50 butterfly (29.74).

Wasko finished second in the 50 butterfly (29.65), third in the 200 IM (2:32.29), fourth in the 100 IM (1:09.81), and sixth in the 50 breaststroke (36.28).

Parsons was in the top eight in all four events, winning the 100 fly (1:10.40), taking fifth in the 50 free (27.98), sixth in the 200 IM (2:40.38), and seventh in the 50 fly (31.45).

Jericho Strege was in the top five in all four of her events, taking fourth in the 100 back (1:12.82) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.74), and fifth in the 50 breast (35.12) and 100 IM (1:10.77).

Haley Moebes was fourth in the 50 back (33.26) and 50 fly (30.12), and fifth in the 100 free (1:01.20). Maite Silva helped Shasta earn points by finishing in the top eight in three of her four races: seventh in the 100 back (1:16.77) and eighth in both the 50 breast (38.73) and 50 back (35.58).

Angelique Passidakis was second in 1-meter diving with a score of 18 to collect 17 points.

The team of Griffith, Strege, Wasko and McMutrey was second in the 200 Medley Relay (2:00.74).

MEN FOURTH AT INVITE

The Shasta College men were fourth overall at the invite as seven swimmers combined for 194 points. College of the Sequoias won the men's division with 763 points and Clovis was second (530).

Freshman Wyatt Baldree was 14th overall male finisher, finishing in the top 10 in three of his four races. He was fourth in the 200 IM (2:26.74), fifth in the 100 IM (1:09.14), and ninth in the 100 fly (1:04.76).

Ben Morris was fifth in the 50 back (37.79) and ninth in the 100 back (1:30.95), and Jared Marrs was sixth in the 100 breast (1:11.89), eighth in the 50 breast (32.64), and 10th in the 50 free (25.11).

Mitchell Palmer earned a top 10 finish in the 100 IM (1:11.67), good enough for ninth. Joaquin Silva was seventh in both the 100 back (1:14.11) and 100 IM (1:10.60). Bryon Upshaw was eighth in the 100 IM (1:10.71).
