KNIGHTS' SOFTBALL SPLITS ON OPENING WEEKEND

REDDING, Calif. – Shasta College's softball team split a pair of games in the season-opening weekend, falling to Santa Rosa 7-1 in the opener and beating West Valley College 6-4.

Knights' sophomore Alison Lee had a great start to the season, going 5 for 7 at the plate across the two games and picking up a victory as a pitcher by nearly throwing a complete game. Sophomore Haylee Sobrero also racked up five hits and hit her first home run of the season.

In the loss to Santa Rosa, 14 different Knights recorded an at bat in the game. Lee and Sobrero each had two-hit games with Sobrero scoring the lone run. Lindsey Beck had an RBI.

Freshman starting pitcher Marissa Hopkins took the loss. Freshman Reilly Rupert struck out four and allowed three runs – one earned – on seven hits across six innings in relief.

Against West Valley, Shasta led 6-0 going into the bottom of the seventh and held on to win. Lee (1-0) struck out three, walked four and allowed three earned runs on five hits in 6.2 innings. Rupert struck out a batter and allowed a home run in 0.1 innings of relief.

Lee was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run, Sobrero was 3 for 4 with a solo home run and two RBIs, Hopkins was 2 for 3 with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, which was the difference maker. Erica Holland was 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI.

Shasta (1-1) plays a doubleheader Tuesday at Yuba College against Sierra College and Yuba College.
