SHASTA COLLEGE BURIES NO. 17 FEATHER RIVER 89-80

QUINCY, Calif. – Five Shasta College men's basketball players scored in double figures to knock off No. 17 Feather River College 89-80 Saturday night in Quincy.

The Knights (12-9, 3-1 Golden Valley Conference) started off hot by making nine 3-pointers in the first half to jump out to a 48-35 lead at the break. Sophomore Kellen Gerig closed the game out, scoring nine of Shasta's final 14 points. Sophomore guard Grant Smith also hit a crucial 3-pointer late in the game to help complete the upset.

Gerig was one of four Knights to score 15 points in the game, tallying 13 in the second half. Sophomore guard Jordan Spaschak, Smith and sophomore Blake Trent also contributed 15 points. Sophomore forward Hunter Johnson pitched in with 14 points in the win, and David O'Brien chipped in with nine points.

Shasta, which ranks fifth in the state in 3-pointers made, added 14 3-pointers to its season total. Trent led the way on the night with five 3s, ranking him fourth in the state this year with 77 made 3s, and is shooting 42.6 percent from beyond the arc.

Feather River's Gerard Andrus scored a game-high 28 points – 20 of which came in the second half – and teammate Jamel White added 19 points as the Golden Eagles (13-8, 2-2 GVC) have now dropped four of their past six contests.

Shasta only conference blemish came in a three-point overtime defeat against No. 8 Butte College. Shasta hosts College of the Redwoods Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
