SHASTA FOURTH AT MODESTO TOURNAMENT

MODESTO, Calif. – Shasta College men's basketball team's winning streak reached six games before it was snapped last week at the Modesto Tournament.

The Knights finished fourth in the tournament. Shasta beat NorCal's No. 11 team Sacramento City College 87-79, lost to Mendocino 84-80, and fell to NorCal's No. 12 team Ohlone 71-70 in overtime.

Sophomores Kellen Gerig (21.3 points, 8.3 rebounds) and Hunter Johnson (13 points, 9.3 rebounds) both nearly averaged a double-double in the tournament, and sophomore Blake Trent was the only other Knight to score in double figures in each of the three games.

Shasta (7-5) shot 56 percent from the floor in the win over Sacramento City, and had six players score in double-digits. Gerig led the way with 26 points, sophomore Jordan Spaschak and Johnson each tallied 13 points, Trent added 11 points, and Zach Lowe and Kehmar McMillian each chipped in with 10 points.

The winning streak came to an end with the loss to Mendocino despite leading 42-38 at halftime. Shasta made a season-low seven 3-pointers in the game while Mendocino made 13. Gerig was the Knights' leading scorer with 23 points to go with 12 rebounds, Johnson also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards, Trent scored 15 points on four 3s, and Spaschak scored 12 points, dished 10 assists, and grabbed eight rebounds.

Shasta was 8 of 33 from beyond the arc in the overtime loss to Ohlone, which was 13 of 24 (54 percent) in the game from 3-point land. Gerig scored a team-high 15 points and added nine rebounds, Johnson scored 12 points and pulled down nine boards, Lowe scored 12 points, and Trent pitched in with 10 points.

Next up for Shasta is CCCAA's No. 14 ranked team Cerritos College to open the College of the Sequoias Tournament on Friday in Visalia.
