SHASTA WINS SEASON-OPENER

REDDING, Calif. – Shasta College men's basketball team won its season-opener 83-73 over San Joaquin Delta at Cabrillo College.

The Knights led 44-37 at the half and finished the game with 11 made 3-pointers, thanks to sophomore Blake Trent shooting 8 of 10 from beyond the arc. Brent scored a team-high 24 points as one of three Knights in double figures. Sophomore Zach Lowe scored 17 points, sophomore Hunter Johnson recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore Kellen Gerig had nine points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Spaschak led the team with six assists and three steals.

Shasta couldn't keep the momentum going in the tournament, falling to Cabrillo 75-65. Shasta lost both games of the Solano Tournament on Thursday and Friday, falling to Reedley 62-57 and Los Medanos 71-56.

All five starters made a 3-pointer for Shasta against Cabrillo, again nailing 11 as a team. Gerig scored 18 points, Johnson pitched in with 14 points, and Spaschak had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Against Reedley, Shasta had 20 turnovers and only got to the line six times, making three foul shots. Freshman Anthony Young led the Knights in scoring with 16 points off the bench, including four 3s. Trent had 11 points, Johnson finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Gerig had eight points and eight boards.

Seven Shasta players combined to hit 13 treys in the loss to Los Medanos. Johnson pulled down nine rebounds to go with his team-high 18 points, and sophomore Grant Smith added 10 points. Young scored nine points and Spaschak's 13 rebounds and six assists were team-highs.

The Knights host their own Shasta Invitational Tournament, which begins at 2 p.m. Friday and runs through the championship game Sunday at 4 p.m.

Shasta plays Columbia Friday at 6 p.m.
