REDDING, Calif. – The Shasta College women's track team captured the Golden Valley Conference title over the weekend for the second straight year.
Shasta's women won six events and collected 127 points, ahead of Butte College (103 points), College of the Siskiyous (39) and College of the Redwoods (29), respectively.
The Shasta men won five events and took third with 75.66 points, behind GVC champion Butte (116), and Redwoods (107), respectively. Siskiyous was fourth with 15.33 points.
"We are very excited about winning our second consecutive GVC women's championship," said Bryon Hamilton, Shasta College's head track and field coach. "Our athletes and coaches worked very hard and the effort paid off. In addition, we had multiple individual GVC champions and medalists. I'm very proud of the entire program."
For the women, Shasta's 4x100-meter relay team of Madison Barragan, Kayla Bickford, Maddison Smedley and Julisa Wold won in 51.75 seconds. The Knights' 4x400 relay team of Barragan, Julia Hill, Regin Loftin and Smedley was second in 5:38.89.
Hill collected the most points for the Knights with 16. She finished second in the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 9.75 inches, third in both the 400 hurdles (1:21.06) and javelin throw (92-6), and fourth in each of the 100 hurdles (20.53), the long jump (14-9.25), and triple jump (29-10.25).
Claire Walton was the only double GVC individual champion, hitting season-best marks of 38-4.75 to win the shot put and 105-7 to win the discus. She was also second in the hammer throw (115-7) and fourth in the javelin (91-10). Bickford was the 400 hurdles champion by more than four seconds, finishing in 1:14.39. She was second in the 400 (1:08.34), third in the 100 hurdles (19.27), and fourth in the 100 (14.40).
Julie Bradley was the GVC champion in the 3,000 steeplechase (15:07.97), was third in the 10,000 (57:35.60), fourth in the 1,500 (6:25.09), and fifth in the triple jump (24-8.25). Cassie Young hit a season-high of 10-6 in the pole vault to capture the GVC title. She was third in the high jump (4-7.75) and the long jump (15-7.75), and fifth in the javelin (91-8).
Barragan set season-best times in the 100 (14.05) and 200 (28.65), finishing fourth and second, respectively. Her 30-6.5 mark in the triple-jump was also a season-best for third.
Wold was second in the 100 (13.31) and fifth in the 200 (29.67), Natalie Garcia-Gomez was third in the 400 (1:09.83) and fourth in the 800 (2:53.74), and Smedley was second in the pole vault (8-0).
Loftin was third in the pole vault (6-6), fourth in the high jump (14-2) and fifth in the 400 (1:10.23), and Sabrina Peppel was second in the 3,000 steeplechase (16:43.35) and fifth in the 800 (3:10.32).
Alyson Zuidema was third in the hammer throw (105-5), fifth in the shot put (25-3.5), and Lacey Peddicord was fourth in the 10,000 (1:06:54) fifth in the 1,500 (6:53.23).
SHASTA MEN TAKE FOURTH
Shasta's 4x100 relay team of Kenio Mike, Cody Beaumont, Peter Savride and Chris Rosero won with a season-best time of 42.84 seconds, and Shasta's 4x400 relay team of Joseph Williams, Samuel Grafe, Connor Nix and Caleb Tolbertson was third (3:56.47).
Beaumont won the triple jump (43-8.5), was third in the 200 (23.35) and the long jump (21-1.5), and fifth in the 100 (11.52).
Other event winners included Rosero capturing the 100-meter dash title (11.32), Patrick Bigalow winning the pole vault (14-2.75), and Aedan Slack winning the hammer throw (139-5).
In running events, Tolbertson was second in the 400 hurdles (1:02.54), Mike was fourth in the 100 (11.44), Travis Peachee was fifth in the 110 hurdles (22.49), and Grafe was third in the 10,000 (35:37.88), fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:42.42), fifth in the 5,000 (17:32.65).
In field events, Ashton Vanzant was second in the triple jump (41-4.5), Bigalow was third in the high jump (6-0), Erik Valdez was third in the pole vault (13-9), Karnell Calloway was fourth in the high jump (5-6), and Nix and Williams tied for fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 10-8.75. Justin Hellyer was a standout among the throws, finishing fourth in the javelin with a season-best mark of 171-11. Cole Parker was second in the shot put (44-0.75) and fifth in the discus (128-11), and Payton Harrell was third in the shot put (42-0).
