SHASTA LOSES GVC SERIES TO BUTTE

REDDING, Calif. – The Shasta College baseball team lost its three-game Golden Valley Conference opening series to Butte College, falling 8-3 on the road and then splitting Saturday's home doubleheader with a 4-1 loss and a 5-3 win.

Earlier in the week, Shasta lost 13-4 to Sierra College in a non-conference game.

Sierra 13, Shasta 4
Hayden Boyes was the lone Knight with a multi-hit game, going 2 for 3 with a double, triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Keanu Mizuta hit a triple and Hayden Hill was 1 for 1 with an RBI. Shasta used six pitchers with starter Corey Ober giving up seven earned runs on nine hits in three innings.

Butte 8, Shasta 3
The Roadrunners used a 4-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-all tie and pull away. Ethan Williams was 4 for 4 with a double, Stephen Nelson was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Mizuta had an RBI double and Giacomo Crosetti and Boyes each had a hit and scored a run. Shasta starter Jay Mendez struck out four, walked five and gave up three runs – one earned – on five hits in five innings. Alex Alvarez took the loss, giving up four earned runs on three hits in two innings of relief. Shasta's four pitchers combined to walk 10 batters in the game.

Butte 4, Shasta 1
The Knights' lone run came on an RBI groundout from Gorge, scoring AJ Davies in the fifth inning to make it 2-1. Butte scored once in the seventh and one more in the ninth to pull out the win. Gorge was 2 for 5 with an RBI, Davies was 2 for 3 with a run and Crosetti was 2 for 4 with a double. Kaden Nicholes struck out one, walked none and gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings to take the loss.

Shasta 5, Butte 3
Chris Jacobsen's two-run single in the third gave Shasta a 2-1 lead and the Knights scored a pair in the fourth on a sac fly from Boyes and Davies scored on an error. Shane Taylor's sac fly in the fifth gave the Knights insurance. Payton Jeffries struck out three, walked one and gave up two earned runs on five hits in five innings to earn the win. Julian Esqueda and Tysson Unciano each threw two scoreless frames in relief with Unciano earning the save.

Shasta (1-2 GVC, 6-10) plays all three games this week at Feather River College,, one on Friday and a doubleheader Saturday.
