SHASTA SWEEPS REDWOODS, FALLS TO [2] BUTTE

REDDING, Calif. – The Shasta College softball team split two Golden Valley Conference doubleheaders last week, sweeping College of the Redwoods and losing a pair to Butte College at home.

Autumn Campbell had seven hits on the week, going 7 for 12 with two RBIs and four runs to lead the Shasta offense. Whitney Carnes went 2-1 on the week, earning a win as both a starter and reliever.

Shasta 4, Redwoods 3
Madeline Nightingale scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning for the go-ahead run, snapping Shasta's three-game losing streak. Shelbe Cappello was 2 for 4 with a run, Kaylie McDaniel was 2 for 3 with a double and a run, Khloe Forrister was 2 for 2, McKenzy Fernandes had an RBI double, Nightingale had a hit and scored twice and Autumn Giannini was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Whitney Carnes allowed three unearned runs on five hits and struck out seven to earn the win.

Shasta 16, Redwoods 15
Despite an eight-run fifth inning, Shasta had to rally in the bottom of the seventh to win. With Redwoods leading 15-12, pinch-hitter Jessica Boyes hit a walk-off two-run single to complete the sweep. Autumn Campbell was 5 for 5 with  a double, two RBIs and three runs, Savannah Cruz was 4 for 5 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs and runs, Cappello was 2 for 5 with a two-run double, Fernandes was 2 for 4 with two runs, Nightingale was 2 for 5 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Giannini and McDaniel each scored two runs. Carnes threw four innings of relief and gave up eight runs on nine hits with five strikeouts to earn the win.

#2 Butte 15, Shasta 0 (5)
The Knights were no-hit in the game and gave up at least two runs in each inning to fall at home. Fernandes and Forrister each drew a walk and were the lone Shasta hitters to reach base. Carnes gave up 12 earned runs on 16 hits to take the loss.

#2 Butte 21, Shasta 1 (5)
The Knights surrendered a season-high 21 runs, all earned by McDaniel, who gave up 24 hits and five home runs in the defeat. Shasta's lone run came in the first inning when Fernandes singled in Campbell. Giannini, McDaniel and Fernandes each had singles while Campbell was 1 for 2 with a double.

Shasta (2-2 GVC, 7-11) plays at College of the Siskiyous Thursday and hosts Lassen on Saturday.
