SHASTA COLLEGE STARTS THE YEAR WITH 5-1 WIN OVER SACRAMENTO

The Shasta College women's soccer team split in the opening week of the season by beating Sacramento City College 5-1 before losing 11-1 to San Joaquin Delta.

In the victory, Aspen Smith scored in the fifth minute and Olivia Smith scored two first-half goals to lead the way. Shasta kept the pressure on in the beginning of the second half by successfully capitalizing on a penalty kick by Madisun Allen. Paige Reed put the game completely out or reach at 5-0 with a goal in the 51st minute.

Jenna Monahan had two assists and Kirstin Adams and Aspen Smith each had an assist. Goalkeeper Bethany Sather had six saves in the win.

"This was a real good way to start our season," Shasta head coach Dan Fults said, adding him and coach Steve Hofferber both believe that this hard-working squad will continue improving and build upon last year's 12-6-1 season.

Against Delta, Shasta surrendered six first-half goals and Sather had 12 saves. Daisy Contreras scored four goals for Delta.

Shasta (1-1) plays twice on the road this week at Sierra College on Tuesday and at American River College on Friday.
