SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Cassie Young continues her impressive Shasta College track and field career, winning two events Saturday at the Beaver Relays at American River College.
Young, a returning All-American, captured the high jump with a mark of 5 foot, 1 inch, and took the pole vault with a height of 10-6. She also finished fifth in the javelin throw with a season-best distance of 82-9.
"Cassie did a great job; she hit State A in the high jump and also had a good day in the pole vault," Shasta College head track and field coach Bryon Hamilton said. "Overall, considering the weather, I thought our team performed very well."
Although Young was the only Knight to win an event out of the men's or women's teams, Shasta had plenty of notable performances on the day.
WOMEN
Shasta's relay team of Madison Barragan, Kayla Bickford, Maddison Smedley and Julisa Wold was second in the 4x100-meter relay in 53.19 seconds.
For running events, Wold was eighth in the 100 (13.51), Natalie Garcia-Gomez was seventh in the 200 (1:10.49), Bickford was fourth in the 400 hurdles relay (1:16.47), and Julie Bradley was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (15:36.58).
Shasta sophomore Claire Walton was a top competitor, finishing in the top 12 in each of her four events. She was second in the shot put (38-7.75), seventh in the discus (100-0), seventh in the javelin (79-6), and 12th in the hammer throw (93-5). The shot put, hammer throw and javelin were all her top marks this season.
In other field events, Barragan was second in the long jump (14-2.5), Julia Hill was fourth in the javelin (85-1), Smedley was fifth in the pole vault (7-6.5), and Regin Loftin was eighth in the javelin (74-8). Alyson Zuidema was 15th in the shot put (25-4.75), 15th in the discus (78-9), 17th in the hammer throw (76-2)
MEN
Shasta's relay team of Kenio Mike Jr, Cody Beaumont, Karnell Calloway and Chris Rosero was third in the 4x100 in 43.46.
In other running events, Rosero was fourth in the 100 (11.42), Samuel Grafe was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in (11:26.46), and Caleb Tolbertson was 10th in the 400 hurdles (1:05.75).
Patrick Bigalow and Beaumont were the closest of Shasta's male competitors to win an event. Bigalow was third in the pole vault (13-5.25) while Beaumont was third in the triple jump (41-1). Beaumont also finished seventh in the long jump (20-7).
Eric Valdez was seventh in the pole vault (12-5.5), Calloway was 11th in the high jump (5-2.5), and Ashton Vanzant was 11th in the triple jump (39-0.5) and 18th in the long jump (19-8.25). Conor Nix was 12th in the pole vault (10-6), 14th in the high jump (5-0.5) and 23rd in the javelin (88-9).
Aedan Slack was the top thrower, taking sixth in the shot put (39-10), seventh in the discus (124-8) and 15th in the hammer throw (117-0). Payton Harrell was ninth in the shot put (38-1.5), 17th in the discus (111-8) and 22nd in the hammer throw (78-7). Cole Parker was eighth in the javelin (142-5) and ninth in the discus (121-10), Peter Saveride was ninth in the javelin (137-0), and Justin Hellyer was 12th in the javelin (129-6). Derek Bruner was 15th in the shot put (31-3.25), 20th in the hammer throw (95-7) and 24th in the discus (91-4).
Shasta College travels to Chico State Saturday for the Chico Invite at 10 a.m.
