MARYSVILLE, Calif. – In an expanded meet, the Shasta College women's and men's track and field teams held their own Saturday, finishing third and fourth, respectively at the Yuba College 49er Invite.
The Knights had five men and four women score in multiple events on the day, including sophomore All-American Cassie Young and Cody Beaumont, each of which placed in at least four events to lead the way.
"We had some great individual results on Saturday," Shasta head track coach Bryon Hamilton said. "Patrick Bigalow won the men's pole vault with a personal record, Cassie Young and Cody Beaumont scored in four events and freshman Kayla Bickford won the 400 hurdles. We continue to improve each week and we are excited about the upcoming meet at American River College on Saturday."
American River College had both the high score for the men's and women's meet with 185.5 points and 150 points, respectively.
Women
Shasta's 4x100-meter relay team of Bickford, Young, Maddison Smedley and Julisa Wold was second in 53.16 seconds, and the 4x400 relay team of Julie Bradley, Regin Loftin, Natalie Garcia-Gomez and Sabrina Peppel was fourth in 5:13.22.
Young, in her first meet of the season, won the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, 4 inches. She was second in the high jump (5-0.25), second in the long jump (15-11.5), and third in the javelin (79-1).
Madison Barrigan and Julia Hill were the only other two cross-event competitors. Barrigan was sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.99) and eighth in the 200 (30.13). She was seventh in the long jump (13-8.25). Hill was fourth in the long jump (15-2.75) and seventh in the 100 hurdles (22.05).
In other running events, Bickford won the 400 hurdles (1:16.41), Wold was fourth in the 100 (13.01), Garcia-Gomez was sixth in the 800 (2:57.39), and Bradley was eighth in the 1,500 (6:37.13).
For field events, Claire Walton was second in the shot put (36-5.5) and seventh in the discus (100-6). Loftin was third in the high jump (4-2.25).
Men
Shasta was fourth behind ARC, Butte (123 points) and De Anza (107.5).
Shasta's 4x100 relay team of Kenio Mike Jr, Beaumont, Karnell Calloway and Chris Rosero was second in 43.61.
Beaumont collected points in three other events, taking third in the long jump (20-4.5), third in the triple jump (42-5.25), and fourth in the 200 (23.20). Aedan Slack also placed in three individual events, finishing fourth in the shot put (39-6), sixth in the discus (118-11) and seventh in the hammer throw (128-6).
In running events, Rosero was fifth in the 100 (11.20) and seventh in the 200 (23.46), and Mike Jr was seventh in the 100 (11.49).
In field events, Bigalow was the lone Knight event-winner, winning the pole vault with a personal record mark of 14-1. Ashton Vanzant was seventh in the triple jump (40-1.5) and eighth in the long jump (20-1), Payton Harrell was third in the discus (127-5) and sixth in the shot put (39-3.25), Erik Valdez was third in the pole vault (13-5.25), Joseph Williams was seventh in the pole vault (11-1.75), Cole Parker was fourth in the javelin (149-11), Peter Savride was fifth in the javelin (145-7), and Conor Nix was sixth in the high jump (4-11.75).
Shasta College travels to American River College in Sacramento Saturday for the Beaver Relays starting at 9 a.m.
