SHASTA COLLEGE WOMEN CAPTURE BVC TITLE

FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Shasta College's women's swim team won the Bay Valley Conference championship at Solano Community College in Fairfield on April 19. The Knights' men finished fourth at the meet.

For the women, Shasta's 14 swimmers combined for 1,461 points, edging second-place Clovis, which had 1,412 points. The Knights won three events and had 43 top-10 finishes.

Jericho Strege was the Knights' high-point winner with 112 points, good for seventh overall among the women finishers. Abby Griffith and Dana McMutrey each collected 111 points, tied for eighth.

Shasta's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Griffith, Haley Moebes, Shiree Wasko and McMurtrey was second in 1 minute, 46.03 seconds, and the Knights' 400 Medley Relay team of Griffith, Strege, Stephanie Parsons and McMutrey was second in 4:26.61.

Strege was one of nine Knights to earn top-10 finishes in all four events. Strege won the 50 breaststroke (34.53), was second in the 100 breast (1:15.08), third in the 200 breast (2:46.06) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:10.86). McMurtrey won the 200 free (2:01.58), was third in the 50 backstroke (29.82) and was fourth in the 50 free (26.39) and 100 free (57.32). Griffith was second in the 500 free (5:29.18), 1,650 free (19:16.37) and the 200 back (2:16.40), and was third in the 50 fly (29.57). Parsons had 110 points, finishing second in the 50 fly (29.31), 100 fly (1:07.27) and 200 fly (2:36.55), and fourth in the 500 free (5:52.53). Wasko was second in the 100 Individual Medley (1:05.81), fourth in the 400 IM (5:20.18) and 100 back (1:07.01), and fifth in the 200 IM (2:26.77)

Mirena Guillot was fourth in the 100 fly (1:10.53), sixth in the 500 free (6:08.00) and 200 fly (2:56.87), and seventh in the 50 fly (30.72). Moebes was fifth in the 100 back (1:07.89) and seventh in each of the 50 back (31.47), 50 free (27.42) and 100 free (58.86). Nicole Keane was sixth in the 50 breast (38.29), 400 IM (5:52.70) and the 200 breast (2:59.44), and 10th in the 1,650 free (24:50.12). Maite Silva was eighth in both the 50 back (32.48) and 200 back (2:40.37), and 10th in the 200 free (2:16.97) and 100 back (1:13.10).

Angelique Passadakis won the 3-meter diving with 134.6 points and was second in 1-meter diving with 121.15 points. Emelia Lindsey was eighth in both the 400 IM (6:11.70) and the 1,650 free (24:02.79). Suzette Chavez was ninth in the 100 breast (2:02.59), Kaitlyn McGowan was 11th in both the 50 fly (31.18) and 200 breast (3:26.01), and Andrea Hoheisel's top event was the 1,650 free, taking 14th in 29:28.64.

MEN

Shasta's men's team finished fourth with 496 points. College of the Sequoias won the BVC title with 1,743 points, followed by Clovis (1,425) and Merced (1,310), respectively.

Joaquin Silva was the high-point male competitor for the Knights with 97 points. Silva was fifth in the 200 back (2:20.05) and sixth in the 50 back (28.92), 100 back (1:02.54) and in 1-meter diving with 79.35 points.

Wyatt Baldree was fifth in the 200 IM (2:18.41) and ninth in the 100 fly (1:02.36) and 200 fly (2:23.64), Bryon Upshaw was sixth in the 200 IM (2:22.67) and the 400 IM (5:09.08), and was seventh in the 100 IM (1:05.35), and Jared Marrs was fifth in the 200 breast (2:28.98) and 10th in the both the 50 breast (31.62) and 100 breast (1:07.62).

Ben Morris was eighth in the 100 back (1:17.52) and 10th in the 50 back (33.57), Mitchell Palmer was sixth in the 1,650 free (22:22.37) and 11th in the 500 free (6:16.71), and Christian Hoheisel's top event was the 100 IM, finishing 10th in 1:09.94.

Shasta College will send competitors to the CCCAA State Championships on May 3 at DeAnza Community College.
