REDDING, Calif. – The Shasta College baseball team split a four-game series with Lassen College last week, splitting Thursday's doubleheader with a 20-6 loss and 17-6 win and Saturday's doubleheader with a 15-11 loss and 9-1 win.
Jaden Gorge batted 9 for 14 in the series to lead the offense.
THURSDAY
Lassen 20, Shasta 6
The Knights gave up three runs in the first two innings and allowed 10 in the top of the ninth. All five Shasta pitchers allowed at least one run. Keanu Mizuta was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Jaden Gorge, Mason Wood and Chris Jacobsen each had a double.
Shasta 17, Lassen 6
Jay Mendez allowed three earned runs on five hits in four innings with four strikeouts and three walks while Jared Hummell struck out two and walked two across three hitless innings of relief. The top third of the Knights' lineup combined to go 10 for 18 in the game with 11 runs and eight RBIs. Leadoff hitter Gorge was 5 for 5 with five runs and two RBIs, AJ Davies was 3 for 4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs, Wood was 2 for 4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs and Payton Jeffries went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Mizuta added two RBIs in the win.
SATURDAY
Lassen 15, Shasta 11
The Knights led 11-5 before giving up seven runs in the seventh and three in the eighth. Jeffries took the loss, allowing six runs in two innings. Max Nebel received a no decision with five runs on seven hits across six innings. Derek Ray was 4 for 5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs, Gorge was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs, Wood hit a three-run triple and Nicholas Newton had an RBI double and scored twice.
Shasta 9, Lassen 1
Nebel's RBI double and Gorge's RBI single highlighted a four-run second inning for the Knights and they never looked back. Dylan Foster struck out four, walked none and gave up three hits across three scoreless innings. Nebel had two doubles, two RBIs and a run, Davies was 2 for 4 with a run, and Ray and Ethan Williams each scored twice.
Shasta is 3-3 overall on the year and hosts College of the Siskiyous in a doubleheader Thursday at noon.
