WEED, Calif. – The Shasta College baseball team split a Golden Valley Conference road doubleheader against College of the Siskiyous Sunday, winning the first game 7-2 and losing the nightcap 9-7.
The first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday were postponed due to weather.
Shasta (14-18, 9-8 GVC) picked up the victory behind another strong pitching performance from sophomore Sam Wells, who allowed one earned run on five hits in five innings. Wells also struck out five and walked none to earn the victory on the hill and move to 6-4 on the season.
The Knights racked up 11 hits in the game with Austin Healy accounting for four of those hits, going 4 for 5 with an RBI double, two runs and a stolen base. Payton Edwards also had a multi-hit day, going 2 for 5. Brandon Anderson and Hunter Rasica each had a hit and an RBI, Easton Waterman was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Eric Spencer drove in two runs.
Shasta's Waterman stole home and Rasica singled in Healy in the eighth to tie it at 7 but Siskiyous matched it with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to hold of the Knights.
Sam Torsey was credited with the loss, allowing two runs in one inning of relief work. Shasta starter Anthony Becerra took a no decision after giving up seven runs – five earned – on eight hits to go with five strikeouts and two walks in four innings. Kolby Button threw three shutout innings of middle relief.
Shasta totaled 13 hits in the game – the third straight game recording a double-digit hit total and 10th time this season they achieved the feat. Shawn Florence was 3 for 5 with an RBI and a run, Daniel Duarte was 3 for 6 with an RBI and a run, Waterman was 2 for 4 with a pair of runs, and Healy scored twice.
Shasta hosts Lassen College Friday at 1 p.m. and goes to Susanville for a single game Saturday at noon. The season series is split at one game apiece.
