REDDING, Calif. – Shasta College's baseball team lost a three-game road series to Cañada College of Redwood City and came away with three losses in four contests on the week.
The Knights (5-8) fell to the Yuba College Miners 9-4 on Tuesday. Shasta dropped the series opener against the Cañada 6-1 Thursday, won 13-5 Friday and lost 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday.
Yuba 9, Shasta 4
The Miners blew the game open with a four-run fifth inning, tagging reliever Damian Diaz for three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Starter Samuel Torsey gave up four runs on six hits and walked three in three innings to fall to 0-2 on the year. Marshell Struble was the Knights' top hitter, going 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and scored a run.
Yuba's six pitchers combined to strike out 15 Shasta batters. Reliever Justin Smith got the win, fanning five of the seven batters he faced in two hitless innings.
Cañada 6, Shasta 1
The Knights couldn't get a run until the eighth inning after the Colts put up three in the bottom of the seventh. Nolan Kennedy singled in Easton Waterman for Shasta's lone run. Jakob Weiser was 2 for 4, Daniel Duarte was 2 for 3 with a double, and Waterman had a double. Shasta's starter Kolby Button took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season. He struck out eight, walked three and allowed two runs on four hits in five innings.
Cañada's Brandon Donley got the win. He walked four, struck out one and threw 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits.
Shasta 13, Cañada 5
Anthony Becerra (1-2) earned his first win of the season on the mound. The sophomore struck out four, walked four, and allowed three earned runs on six hits in four innings. Diaz came in for a three-inning save, allowing three hits without giving up a run.
Shasta put up 10 runs in the first three innings. Payton Edwards had a two-run triple and Austin Healy and Waterman each ripped RBI doubles. Hunter Rasica tripled in a run early on before Healy and Eric Spencer both crushed solo home runs in the sixth.
Spencer was 3 for 3 with a double and three runs, Healy was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, Weiser was 3 for 6 with a double and two RBIs, Edwards had a pair of extra base hits and two RBIs, Waterman had two doubles, and Alex Pynes was 1 for 2 with two RBIs.
The Knights tagged Colts' starter Daniel Perez for six runs in 1.2 innings.
Cañada 5, Shasta 4 – 10 innings
Shasta took a commanding 4-0 lead in the fourth thanks to a double steal resulting in Struble scoring and Spencer doubling in Rasica.
But Cañada got three runs off starter Sam Wells, scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch from Carter Ritala, and won the game on a walk-off fielder's choice off Torsey.
Wells went seven innings, striking out one and walking none while allowing three earned runs on six hits. Torsey (0-3) took the loss, giving up a run in one inning of relief. Duarte was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI and Healy was 2 for 4 with a run.
Cañada's starter Alejandro Cabrera struck out six, walked four, and allowed three earned runs on five hits across seven frames. Evan Yedinak got the win, striking out the only batter he faced in the 10th.
